KHS Graduate Shares Experiences

Kalkaska graduate Elizabeth Dunham (Class of 2009) gave a presentation to the world history classes in the high school and also to some students in the Middle School.  Ms. Dunham is currently a student at Michigan State University, and through the James Madison Honors College is studying Arabic and International Relations.  She has been involved in a study abroad program that has given her sustained use of her Arabic, and has given her the opportunity to experience Muslim and Middle Eastern cultures in Egypt and Chad on two separate occasions.  Elizabeth came back to Kalkaska to share what she has learned from her experiences and to help expose some of our students to some of the commonalities that exist between Americans and Middle Easterners.

Students got the sense that the images both cultures have of each other are somewhat skewed by TV, movies, and the internet, and that it is still very important to learn about people and to try to better understand them. The students that were involved enjoyed the presentation and walked away with a feeling that though we live in different parts of the world, we are still people that share the same hopes, dreams, and desires.  Thank you Ms. Dunham for a spectacular presentation, and also for bringing a piece of the world back to Kalkaska.
